Great to see the new Merchant set has done so well, moving from 10th place in 2015 to 1st place this year- see 2015 results here. Dancers are clearly open to dancing new sets – as long as they fit the bill!
It’s also great tribute to Padraig McEneany, the choreographer of the Merchant set. Padraig also happens to have been my teacher when I was living in Dublin all those years ago, when the classes were held in Wanderers Rugby Club in Ballsbridge, before moving to the Merchant pub on the Quays.
He and his wife Róisín are an example to us all – calm, organised, knowledgable, warm – and incredibly reliable. They sail through teaching classes with barely a wobble, instilling confidence and all the very important basics of set dancing – steps, timing, rhythm and fun. They are much in demand for their teaching skills and make firm friends with people wherever they go – Italy, USA, maybe Australia one day soon?
Here’s to great sets and happy dancing!
